Disability Awareness Month: UTERINE FIBROIDS
July is Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month, a condition which an estimated 80% of people with uteruses will experience before they turn 50. This disproportionately affects black people with uteruses and their symptoms are regularly more severe than white people's symptoms. Up to 50% of people with uterine fibroids will experience symptoms, which can include heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, hormone imbalance symptoms, and pregnancy complications. - Flexible Scheduling: Allow flexible work hours or breaks to manage pain, discomfort, and fatigue in a dignified way.
- Remote Work: When available, allow people to take remote days to manage their symptoms.
- Assistive Technology: A more ergonomic workstation may help the worker with options to sit or stand while working.
- Supportive Culture: Foster an inclusive and understanding workplace culture through education and awareness.
- Job Coaching: Provide access to a job coach or mentor to help navigate workplace challenges.
By integrating these accommodations, we not only support our colleagues affected by Uterine Fibroids but also enrich our workplace with a culture of understanding and respect.
Together, we can make a difference, one accommodation at a time. For helpful information, visit JAN (Job Accommodation Network).
